Adding It Up, published by the Mathematics Learning Study Committee of the National Research Council, addresses concerns that too few students in grades preK-8 are acquiring the knowledge, skill, and confidence to use mathematics successfully. Much of the document focuses on issues related to number but from a broader perspective than just computation. The text includes (1) a synthesis of the rich and diverse research on mathematics learning, preK-8; (2) research-based recommendations for teaching, teacher education, and curriculum to improve student learning; and (3) advice and guidance for educators, researchers, publishers, policymakers, and parents for enhancing the mathematical proficiency of all students.
