This lesson will help young children develop their skills related to collecting, recording, and interpreting data. Children listen to a story about freckles, such Freckle Juice by Judy Blume, and then tally how many of their classmates have or do not have freckles. They line up to create a human bar graph. Then they draw their own faces on sticky notes and use the drawings to create a pictograph. The teacher can demonstrate how to arrange and interpret tally marks arranged in groups of five. Activity sheets, discussion questions, suggestions for assessment, and questions for teacher reflection are included. After completing this lesson, teachers will find other interesting ideas for building children's skills with data in lessons 2 and 5 of this online unit. (sw/jrs)
