The Bird Nest Project

Phase OnePhase TwoPhase ThreeReflection
Introduction
Bird Nest Image
After spying a bird's nest in the play yard, the children began to build bird nests and put them on the fence top.

In the fall, teachers Sonia Garza and Rita Thompson noticed that their class of preschool children, ages 3 to 5, had a new interest. The children had begun to build "nests" from natural materials found in the play yard outside the classroom.

These nests were then carefully placed on the top of the fence as new homes for neighborhood birds. Discussion with the children revealed that their interest stemmed from observing a bird nest in the upper rafters of the pavilion in the play yard, as well as from tape-recorded bird "songs" that we played during naptime to help the children relax and rest. The Bird Nest Project would span nearly six months.
